Meet the team Team Principal Martín Fillola The team principal is responsible for the teams progress, managing people and processes to meet specific deadlines. Under their leadership, we strive towards Silverstone. Technical Director Phil Anstee This role provides technical guidance to the team and ensure the car meets standards of safety and performance. Engineering expertise is important. Vice Technical Director Will Davies This position works closely with the team principal and technical director to help progress towards targets and manage the technical aspects of the car. Treasurer Tilly Wake The treasurer works closely with the team principal to ensure resources are allocated effectively within the constraints of the team's budget. Team Co-ordinator Lorna Ferguson Our team co-ordinator facilitates the day-to-day management of the team. This includes scheduling meetings, organising events and ensuring deadlines are met. They blend engineering with innovation to create efficient, powerful, and smooth propulsion systems, turning raw energy into a thrilling driving experience. POWERTRAINs The secret sauce of sleek, fast cars, the composites team crafts lightweight yet strong materials for the vehicle’s body. They work closely with the aero team, shaping these materials to cut through air with minimal drag. Together, they design aerodynamic masterpieces that boost performance, efficiency, and eye-catching style. Composites The suspension team are responsible for the design, manufacture and testing of the suspension. Suspension is the system that connects the wheels to the chassis and responsible for various components from the springs and dampeners to the wishbones. The suspension sub-team creates a setup which maximised performance and agility. Suspension The driving force behind the Formula Student team, the business crew hustles to bring in the funds. They pitch to sponsors, manage budgets, and create marketing magic to keep the project fueled. By turning engineering dreams into financial reality, they ensure the team has everything it needs to race to victory! Business The spotlight seekers of the Formula Student team, the publicity crew makes sure everyone knows about the team's journey and successes. They handle social media, press releases, and event coverage, turning every test lap and race day into a buzzworthy story. Their goal? To build a passionate fan base, attract sponsors, and keep the excitement revving high! Publicity The cockpit creators of the Formula Student team, the driver cell crew ensures the car feels like an extension of the driver. They design the steering systems, adjust driver fitment, and optimize ergonomics for maximum comfort and control. Their mission is to craft a space where the driver feels perfectly in tune with the car, making every turn smooth and every second count on the track! Driver Cell Meet the tech wizards of the Formula Student team! The electronics crew wires up the car with cutting-edge sensors, control systems, and data acquisition gear. They ensure every button, switch, and display works flawlessly, turning electrical signals into race-winning insights. Their magic keeps the car smart and the team on top! Electronics The virtual test pilots of the Formula Student team, the simulations crew brings the car to life in the digital world before it ever hits the track. They build detailed vehicle models and run simulations to predict performance, allowing us to fine tune the car. They also dive into sim racing, using it as a tool for both fun and learning. PARTNERS We're proud of our partners, who drive innovation in the industry TORBAY MOTOR CLUB Formed in 1950, Torbay Motor Club currently has more than 200 members from all over the country. Promoting interest in motor sport in Torbay and the surrounding area. Torbay Motor Club provide help to anyone starting in competition, from completing their Motorsport UK licence application to entering their first event, encourage and train members for official roles, provide information and advice, and promote events within Torbay and the surrounding area. Torbay Motor Club occasionally run events that are ideal for newcomers to gain experience of motor sport competition. The club has members living across the UK, mostly in the South-West from Gloucestershire to Cornwall and publish a monthly magazine - 'MissFire' – for all members. Their website, and Facebook pages, keep members informed of local, regional and national motor sport news and events. You will be equally well catered for whether you’re seeking some fun in your road car (without the risk of damaging it, or yourself) or you have a more ambitious outlook and a specialist competition vehicle. Club motor sport has many different forms, and costs vary accordingly, but our aim is to promote as broad a spectrum of events as possible, providing opportunities for all tastes and budgets. Wiscombe Park near Honiton has been hosting speed hillclimb events since 1958. It has held rounds of the British Hillclimb Championship since 1962. The 1000-yard course consists of two long straights, three hairpin bends and the Esses. It is considered to be one of the most challenging tracks in the UK and a driver’s favourite. The hill record stands at 31.77s set by the current British Hillclimb Champion, Matt Ryder, in July 2024 driving a Gould GR59 Judd. The racing season at Wiscombe Park runs from April to September – 12 events over 6 race weekends. The events are organised by various motor clubs including Woolbridge, Taunton, Burnham-on-Sea, Torbay, Plymouth, Bristol, MG Car Club, 500 Owners Association, Vintage Sports-Car Club and the National Hill Climb Association (motor bikes and sidecars). In 2024, Wiscombe Park won the prestigious Norrie Galbraith Shield – awarded to the venue judged to have hosted the best event by the organisers of the British Hillclimb Championship. It also won the award in 2022. This award underlines Wiscombe Park’s status as the South West’s premier motorsport venue. History WHERE IT ALL STARTED At Exeter Formula Student, each year brings new challenges and innovations as our team evolves. From our first entry with the XTR1 to the XRX's notable performance, our student-built cars reflect our commitment and progress. Passing scrutineering and competing in events are significant milestones for our projects, highlighting the dedication behind every design. XR11 - 2025 About: Learning from previous experiences and challenges, the XR11 is poised to build on the achievements of the XRX. With a core team carried over from last year, we have focused on refining our processes and addressing past issues. The continuity in our team and the lessons learned ensure that the XR11 will be a significant step forward. While cautious optimism guides us, the groundwork laid this year promises a strong and competitive showing in the upcoming competiton. COMING SOON Martín Fillola - Team Principal. XRX - 2024 About: In 2024, we introduced the XRX at the Silverstone competition. The car successfully passed the Chassis, Tech, Safety, and Tilt tests but encountered several technical issues during the Noise test, ultimately running out of time. Despite these challenges, having a car with a full aero package after not fielding a complete car the previous year was a significant achievement. This year marked one of our best performances, with the XRX outperforming the majority of competitors. A new team dynamic however sets a strong foundation for future success. Livvy Adcock - Stash Secretary xr09 - 2023 About: In 2023, we brought the XR09 to the Silverstone competition, essentially presenting a concept class car at the full competition. Due to team misalignment, the XR09 lacked core features, which impacted its performance. This experience highlighted the need for better internal coordination and led to the implementation of improved structures and processes for the following year. The challenges faced with the XR09 were instrumental in driving our commitment to stronger team collaboration and meticulous planning in future projects. Bill Shelley - Vice Team Principal. The XR08 successfully passed the Safety, Tech, Chassis, and Tilt scrutineering tests, reflecting our consistency. This continued success demonstrated our ongoing commitment to refining our designs and improving our performance, solidifying our presence in the Formula Student competition. Lead XR07b - 2021 & XRE01 About: In 2021, we unveiled the XR07B, an iteration of our previous design, and attended the competition at Silverstone. The XR07B successfully passed Safety, Tech, Chassis, and Tilt scrutineering, and achieved our highest-ever finish, placing 22nd. While this placement was notable, it’s important to mention that the competition saw a smaller number of entries, due to covid-19. Alongside XR07B, we entered into the concept class with a proposed electric design, XRE01, to gather valuable feedback, marking a significant step towards our future transition to electric vehicles. XR07 - 2020 About: In 2020, we introduced the XR07, which showed promising advancements in design and engineering. Unfortunately, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted our plans, preventing us from showcasing the XR07 at competitions. Despite this setback, the development of the XR07 provided valuable experience and laid the groundwork for future projects, reinforcing our resilience and dedication to the Formula Student program. This accomplishment reflected our progress in engineering and design, and provided valuable insights for future improvements. The XR06's performance was a step forward in our Formula Student journey, reinforcing our commitment to refining our approach and enhancing our competitive edge. James Kirkup - Team Principal. Photo - Ben Blethyn Photography XR05 - 2018 About: In 2018, our team proudly presented the XR05, a car that marked a significant milestone in our Formula Student journey. The XR05 successfully passed scrutineering, demonstrating our improved engineering standards and attention to detail. This achievement allowed us to compete in the Endurance event, where we showcased our vehicle’s reliability and performance. The experience with the XR05 not only highlighted our progress but also provided crucial feedback that drove further innovation and refinement in our subsequent designs. This was also our first time running our now signature number of 99! XR04 - 2017 About: In 2017, our team introduced the XR04, and alongside it a return to traditional naming scheme. The XR04 continued our evolution with a focus on refining our design and engineering processes. Although the XR04 did not pass the scrutineering process, it made a notable impact by participating in FSUK after the prior years failure to do so. This experience provided invaluable insights and underscored the importance of meticulous preparation and attention to detail. The challenges faced with the XR04 were instrumental in shaping our approach for future projects and reaffirming our commitment to excellence in the Formula Student competition. XR16 - 2016 About: In 2016, under our new name XRacing, we introduced the XR16, a car that showcased our bold ambitions and innovative vision. With a focus on top-tier aerodynamic design, the XR16 was a significant leap forward in concept, largely realized through CAD designs with only limited physical construction. Despite our efforts, the car did not advance to competition. Nonetheless, the project was a valuable exercise in pushing the boundaries of our engineering capabilities and set the stage for future advancements. Xtr-3 - 2015 About: In our third year, Exeter Formula Student unveiled the XTR-3, continuing our journey of growth and development. The XTR-3 successfully completed the Safety, Tech, Chassis, and Tilt tests during scrutineering. Although we did not progress beyond these stages, the experience provided us with crucial insights and highlighted areas for improvement. This year reinforced our resolve to refine our engineering processes and strive for greater achievements in future competitions. This would also be our final year under the name Exeter Formula Student. XtR-2 - 2014 About: In our second year, the team proudly presented the XTR-2, eager to build upon our initial success. The XTR-2 successfully passed scrutineering and participated in both the Sprint and Endurance events. Although we faced challenges and encountered tougher competition, these experiences were invaluable. They provided us with critical insights and reinforced our commitment to excellence, setting the stage for future progress and innovation in the Formula Student competition. Xtr-1 - 2013 About: In its inaugural year, Exeter Formula Student proudly introduced the XTR-1, a vehicle that marked our debut in the competitive arena. Demonstrating our engineering prowess and dedication, the XTR-1 successfully passed the rigorous scrutineering process, allowing us to participate in key events including acceleration, sprint, and endurance. Our hard work and determination culminated in a respectable 62nd place finish, laying a strong foundation for future endeavors and setting a benchmark for continuous improvement
